How daily weight loss pills work
Wegovy tablets are a once daily oral treatment for weight loss containing semaglutide, a GLP-1 medicine that works with your body to reduce appetite and quieten food cravings, helping you eat less and lose weight alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased activity. It offers a needle free alternative to the weekly injection.
Common side effects include:
Mostly gastrointestinal and usually settle with time: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, indigestion and abdominal pain, most noticeable when starting treatment or increasing the dose. Less common but important: pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and dehydration from persistent vomiting. Patients should read the patient information leaflet before their first dose.
Safety line for the page
Wegovy is a prescription only medicine and is not suitable for everyone. It is prescribed following clinical assessment by our pharmacist and should be used alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity. Speak to your pharmacist or doctor if you have any concerns during treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about Wegovy administration, safety, and access.
Who can take the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill may be suitable for adults who are living with obesity or who are overweight and have a weight-related health condition. Before treatment is prescribed, you'll need to complete an online or face-to-face consultation so a clinician can assess whether it is safe and appropriate for you.
How should I take the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill should be taken once daily, preferably first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Following the dosing instructions carefully helps your body absorb the medication properly and may improve treatment effectiveness.
What happens if I miss a dose of the Wegovy pill?
If you miss a dose, follow the instructions provided with your medication or seek advice from your prescriber. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed tablet, as this may increase the risk of side effects. Always refer to the patient information leaflet for guidance.
Can I switch from Wegovy injections to the Wegovy pill?
In some cases, it may be possible to switch between Wegovy injections and the Wegovy pill. However, the appropriate dose and timing will depend on your current treatment and medical history. A clinician can advise whether switching is suitable for you and how to do so safely.
Will I need to follow a diet while taking the Wegovy pill?
Yes. The Wegovy pill is designed to be used alongside a calorie-controlled diet, regular physical activity, and healthy lifestyle changes. Combining treatment with sustainable habits can help maximise weight loss results and support long-term weight management.
Can I continue taking the Wegovy pill after reaching my target weight?
Weight management is a long-term process, and some people may benefit from ongoing treatment to help maintain their results. If you reach your goal weight, your clinician can review your progress and discuss whether continuing treatment is appropriate for you.
